How to Install a Concrete Fence Yourself

At first glance, installing a concrete fence may seem like a big challenge, but with the right materials, proper tools, and a clear plan, it’s a job you can definitely do yourself. A concrete fence is durable, maintenance-free, and provides excellent privacy as well as protection against wind and noise.

Materials Needed to Install a Concrete Fence

Before you start, it’s important to have all the necessary materials and tools ready. This helps you avoid unnecessary delays during installation.

You will need:

  • Concrete posts
  • Concrete panels
  • String line, spirit level, and measuring tape: for accurate alignment
  • Joint mortar: for sealing the gaps between concrete panels
  • Optional leveling wedges: to adjust the height of the panels
  • Post hole auger or spade: to dig the holes for the posts
  • Concrete mix or quick-setting concrete: to firmly anchor the posts

Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Concrete Fence

Below is a step-by-step plan for installing a concrete fence:

  1. Preparation and Marking:
Start by marking the exact line where the fence will go. Stretch a string line between the starting and ending points, and mark the positions for the concrete posts. Always make sure you’re working within your property boundaries.
  2. Digging the Holes:
Dig holes at the marked locations for the posts. Between the posts, dig a shallow trench for the bottom panels. Make sure the base is level so that your fence will stand straight.
Tip: If the ground is soft, place a stone or paving block under each post to prevent it from sinking.
  3. Installing Posts and Bottom Panels:
Place the first concrete post in its hole and fill around it with concrete mix. Use a spirit level to check that the post is perfectly vertical. Then slide the bottom panel into the groove of the post. Repeat this process for the next post and panel, completing one section at a time.
  4. Installing Fence Panels:
Once the posts are firmly set and the bottom panels are properly aligned, you can slide in the remaining concrete panels. Do this carefully to avoid damaging the panels. After installing each panel, check again that everything is level and straight.
  5. Finishing – Leveling and Pointing:
To finish, use leveling wedges to adjust the panels within the posts (typically on the back side). Seal the joints between the panels with joint mortar. After the mortar sets slightly, remove the wedges. Make sure all horizontal joints are filled evenly with the same mortar.
Small bumps or minor damage to the panels or posts can be repaired with mortar. Allow the concrete to cure properly (at least 24 hours). Finally, check that the fence is stable and that all joints fit neatly together.

Tips for Installing a Concrete Fence

Work with at least two people: Concrete panels are heavy – working together is safer and faster.

Check with a level frequently: This prevents crooked posts or uneven panels.

Wear gloves: Concrete surfaces can be rough on your hands.

Choose a dry day: Rain softens the soil, making installation more difficult.

Let the posts cure properly: This ensures maximum stability.
