Cleaning a Concrete Fence

How can you best clean a concrete fence?
A concrete fence is strong, durable, and requires little maintenance. However, over time, dirt, moss, or algae can accumulate on the surface due to weather conditions, moisture, and air pollution. Regular cleaning of your concrete fence not only keeps it looking neat but also extends the lifespan of the concrete.

Step-by-step guide for cleaning a concrete fence

Step 1) Remove loose dirt and leaves
Start by brushing off loose dirt, sand, leaves, and cobwebs. Use a stiff broom or a brush with synthetic bristles to avoid scratching the concrete surface while cleaning.

Step 2) Prepare a mild cleaning solution
In a bucket, mix lukewarm water with a splash of all-purpose cleaner or a mild degreaser. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the concrete or leave white residue.

Step 3) Scrub the fence
Dip a sturdy brush or broom into the cleaning solution and scrub the concrete thoroughly. Pay extra attention to areas with green algae or dark stains.

Step 4) Use a pressure washer
For stubborn dirt, you can use a pressure washer, but avoid setting it too high. A pressure of around 80–100 bar is sufficient. Keep the nozzle at least 30 cm (12 inches) away from the surface to prevent damage.

Step 5) Rinse and let dry
Rinse the concrete fence thoroughly with clean water to remove all soap residues. Then, let the concrete dry naturally in the open air.

Tips for cleaning a concrete fence

  • Prefer soft brushes over steel brushes; steel can scratch the surface.
  • Prevent moss and algae by rinsing the fence regularly, especially in damp and shady areas of the garden.
  • Apply a protective coating if you want the concrete to stay cleaner longer. A hydrophobic layer prevents dirt and moisture from penetrating the concrete.
  • Clean at least once a year, preferably in spring, to remove winter dirt before it sets in.

What not to use on a concrete fence

  • No chlorine or bleach: these can damage the concrete and affect its color.
  • No acidic cleaners, such as vinegar: acid reacts with the cement in concrete, causing stains and weakening the material.
  • Avoid too high pressure with a pressure washer: this can damage the top layer of concrete and make dirt adhere faster later.
